The original photograph, taken in Flagstaff, Arizona in 2012, captures the iconic Motel Downtowner advertising tower, complete with its nostalgic $5.00 per night sign. This Sign structure is a remaining echo of the advertising war. In the 1930s, a sign war erupted between several hotels in Flagstaff as they vied for travelers on Route 66. The motel located one block south of Route 66 and was originally built in 1919 when the road through town was called “the Old Trails Highway”. The Downtowner erected massive 60-foot Advertising Tower to draw in customers, and these iconic sign still attracts today.
